String Orchestra

The Vancouver Resonance Festival (VRF) adopts a dual-track structure, allowing orchestras with different artistic goals to participate through either a Competition Track or a Non-Competitive Exchange Track.

Within the same international festival platform, VRF provides opportunities for professional performance, evaluation, learning, and cultural exchange.

Participation Structure

Competition Track

The Competition Track is designed for orchestras seeking formal evaluation and professional jury feedback.

Participating orchestras will take part in the following festival activities:

  • Opening Ceremony and Opening Concert
  • Two workshops as part of the VRF Academy
  • One full-length public exchange concert (approximately 60 minutes)
  • One competition performance in a main concert venue (evaluated by the professional jury)
  • Upon recommendation by the jury, selected ensembles may be invited to perform in the Festival Gala / Highlight Concert
  • Closing Ceremony and joint festival activities

Orchestras in the Competition Track will receive official jury feedback and may be awarded corresponding honors or prizes.

Jury feedback may be provided in written form, oral sessions, or a combination of both, depending on the festival arrangement.

Non-Competitive Exchange Track

The Non-Competitive Exchange Track focuses on formal performance, learning, and international exchange.

It is suitable for orchestras that do not prioritize competitive ranking but value artistic presentation and international stage experience.

Participating orchestras will take part in:

  • Opening Ceremony and Opening Concert
  • Workshops as part of the VRF Academy
  • One full-length public exchange concert (approximately 60 minutes)
  • Professional feedback and artistic exchange with musicians and faculty
  • By invitation of the VRF Artistic Team, selected ensembles may participate in theFestival Gala / Highlight Concert
  • Closing Ceremony and joint festival activities

The Non-Competitive Exchange Track involves no rankings and no competitive evaluation.

Invitations to the Gala / Highlight Concert are based on artistic quality, program distinction, and overall curatorial considerations, not on competition results.

Repertoire Requirements – Competition Track

Orchestras in the Competition Track are required to present a program of 20–25 minutes, consisting of:

  1. A compulsory work announced by the organizer
  2. A work by a composer from the ensemble’s home country or cultural background
  3. A contemporary-style work (which may be identical to Item 2)
  4. Additional freely chosen repertoire to complete the required duration

The jury recommends that programs demonstrate technical proficiency, musical depth, and stylistic contrast.

Programs are encouraged to include both fast, technically demanding passages and lyrical or slow sections.

🚫 Concertos or solo works of any kind are not permitted in the Competition Track.

Exchange Concert Repertoire Guidelines

  • A full-length public concert of approximately 60 minutes
  • Repertoire is determined by the ensemble and confirmed with the organizer

Programs are encouraged to reflect cultural identity, thematic coherence, or complete structural concepts.

The use of thematic programming, symphonic movements, or representative works is welcomed.

Instrumentation & Arrangement Policy

  • Arrangements that help highlight an orchestra’s unique artistic character are welcome.
  • VRF encourages repertoire selections that fully reflect each ensemble’s sonic identity, instrumentation strengths, and artistic direction.

All arrangements must meet professional performance standards and maintain overall program integrity.

Any special instrumentation or technical requirements must be declared at the time of application to facilitate stage and rehearsal planning.

Repertoire Submission & Important Notes

  • All participating ensembles must submit complete repertoire information at the time of application.
  • Any repertoire involving piano accompaniment must be clearly indicated during registration.

All performances must be presented as full ensemble performances.

Solo or concerto-style works are not permitted.

Participating ensembles are responsible for ensuring that all repertoire complies with copyright and performance licensing regulations.

Honors & Certificates for the Non-Competitive Exchange Track

Competition Track Awards

All orchestras and members who successfully complete the Non-Competitive Exchange Track will receive the VRF International Exchange Performance Certificate.

♪ This certificate serves as official recognition of participation in a formal international music festival performance.

Ensembles demonstrating outstanding artistic quality may be awarded the VRF Artistic Recognition Award, or other curated distinction honors determined by the VRF Artistic Team.

♫ These honors do not imply ranking or competition and are granted as curatorial recognition.
